Wines: Vista del
Halcón -
2001 Hawk Hill Vineyard, Russian River Valley, Chardonnay
The Vista del Halcón Chardonnay is from the Hawk Hill
Vineyard, an important land mass situated in the southwestern-most corner of the
Russian River appellation.
Hawk Hill Vineyard has deep historical roots. When the Spanish parceled out land,
this region was called Rancho Canada de Jonive. It provided a buffer zone between the
Spanish Presidio to the south in San Francisco, and Fort Ross to the north, which was
inhabited by the Russians.
Hawk Hill Vineyard is located at a high point between the cool ocean breezes of
Bodega Bay, and warm, fertile plain of Santa Rosa. The land is farmed by the
Michalczyk family, who have cultivated and planted over five acres of Chardonnay
grapes. The vineyard is planted on a steep slope, and fights erosion with minimal
impact techniques.
The Michakczyks meet the challenges of each day with integrated pest management.
They encourage owls to nest in boxes that have been set out in the hills. This region
is also home to many hawks and eagles. All these predatory birds control the rodent
population. The soil at Hawk Hill Vineyard is porous and fast draining. Tiny grape
clusters produce intensely lean and flavorful Chardonnay.

Winemaker Notes
The aroma of the Vista del Halcón 2001 Hawk Hill Vineyard, Russian River
Valley Chardonnay exhibits an interplay of crisp to creamy in both the nose and the
palate. On the nose, it is bright and crisp with inviting tart green apple, pear, and
citrus aromas, and has an underlying hint of butterscotch with a slight note of green
peppercorn. Earthy Russian River Valley characteristics on the palate, this
Chardonnay has bright fruit flavors, yet has a soft butter roundness on the finish.
The crisp acidity is beautifully balanced, creating a very refreshing wine. All these
flavors linger in delicate balance long after you have enjoyed this 2001 Hawk Hill
Vineyard Chardonnay.
