Wines: La
Sorpresa-
2002 La Sorpresa Chardonnay
Our La Sorpresa Chardonnay has excellent fruit from the
Sangiacomo Vineyard, located in the Sonoma County region of Carneros. The Sangiacomo
family has been farming and caring for this land since they first moved into Sonoma
Valley. Soils from this area are gravelly, riparian clay loam, characteristic of
finer vineyards in Carneros. Breezy, cool conditions from San Pablo Bay make this an
ideal growing area for cool climate grapes like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and certain
Merlot clones. Since the vineyard receives early morning fog and experiences warm
days throughout the growing season, grapes are usually harvested in mid-October,
later than most regions for Chardonnay.
The 2002 La Sorpresa has luscious fruit, and is an honest
expression of this location; one that is consistently celebrated for many
award-winning wines. This elegant Chardonnay from Dijon Clone 95 is unfiltered and
unfined, which will allow it to age gracefully and naturally, and put into the
classification of a fine wine.
La Sopresa is Spanish for "the surprise." We named this
wine La Sorpresa, because while it has experienced 100 percent malolactic
fermentation, it still allows a surprisingly soft-fruit flavor profile to shine
through, a profile that exhibits the qualities of tremendous depth and intensity.

Winemaker Notes
Our opulent, 2002 La Sopresa Chardonnay is a complex blend of ultra rich
butterscotch, fig, pear and honeydew melon flavors, with buttery notes that all segue
into toasty vanilla overtones. The fruit is centered with additional flavors of
grapefruit and honeydew melon, that all linger on the palate. An elegantly smooth
finish has a long aftertaste that is pleasant and delicious.
Proprietors Bill & Gerry Brinton suggest that the 2002 La Sorpresa Chardonnay
is best paired with chicken, fish, vegetables, and salads that have slightly
sweet-and-sour based sauces.
