92 POINTS - This wine's plump core of red currant and darker plum flavor melds into tannins that hold an intriguing, earthy character. The fine integration of the structure and the length of fruit flavor both suggest this will grow increasingly elegant and delicious with age.

...the fruit emerges, currants and cherries, blackberries and plums, and they ride through the finish. It is a classic, cellar worthy Napa Cabernet that will only get better through 2010.
California Grapevine Vol. 30, No. 1 February - March 2004
90 point rating ...Medium- dark ruby; attractive, rich, intense, plummy, cedary, sweet currant and black cherry fruit aroma with notes of coffee and overtones of creamy oak; full body, big, rich, plush, textured, intense, highly extracted, cedary, toasty, red currant and ripe black cherry fruit flavors with a long finish; medium to full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Precocious and very appealing to taste now though deserves several more years of bottle aging. Very highly recommended.

"... the 2002 La Sorpresa Chardonnay ~ That's from Carneros from the Sangiacomo Vineyard. Deep, impressively rich aromas, toasty caramelly quality carries right onto the palate. Soft and supple richness makes this very appealing. Just pour
a glass and enjoy it. But wait, there's enough stuff here, enough substance to serve this with… how about maybe a lobster or a poultry dish that has a rich cream sauce..."

Impresses for the sheer volume of the fruit. Flamboyant tropical pineapple, mango, guava, lots of dusty spices, rich oak, but manages to hold onto balance, dryness and even a sense of finesse all the way through the long finish.
91 points, The Wine News, February/March 2005
Deep gold hue with a tinge of emerald. Sliced apple scents with a note of lime peel. Exceedingly rich with grilled pineapple and apricot nectar flavors. Lengthy toasted close.
90 point rating - Very Highly Recommended, California Grapevine, Vol. 30, No. 6 December 2004 - January 2005
Medium light, golden yellow; attractive, earthy, initially somewhat restrained, ripe pear with hints of spiced apple pie, ripe peach, butterscotch and vanilla; full bodied; rich, plush, supple, lemon and ripe pear flavor, with notes of toasted hazelnut and vanilla; full mouth feel; firmly structured; lingering aftertaste.

Shows very appealing fruit. Very Highly Recommended
Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine...January 2006
Straightforward appely in its fruit tones and taking on both a bit of richness and a hint of spice from its oak, this well-balanced effort is full but never heavy on the palate and its light notes of brightness and candied apples add further to its immediacy.

"2002 Las Patolitas Chardonnay ~ That's a blend of grapes from
the Sangiacomo Vineyard and Bald Mountain. Luscious, full ripe
aromas of tropical fruit with a fine acidity on the palate.
The flavors linger very pleasing with a soft, lush feel. A really
nicely balanced wine. Priced - $19.99…
88 point rating, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, February 2004
...If you like them rich and oaky, this Chard's for you. Tropical fruit, pear and peach flavors are mingled with smoke, vanilla, and buttered toast to forge a strong, flashy wine.
90 point rating - Very highly recommended, California Grapevine Vol. 29, No. 6, December 2003-January 2004
Medium-light yellow color; attractive, forward, floral, honeyed, ripe pear and tropical fruit aroma with hints of grapefruit and butterscotch; full body; rich and supple in the mouth with citrussy, green apple and ripe peach flavors and hints of residual sugar; well balanced and structured; lingering aftertaste. This very appealing, fruit-driven Chardonnay developed with airing in the glass and is refreshing to drink now.
The Colorado WINE NEWS, Volume 13, No. 4
The 2002 Chardonnay, Las Patolitas Carneros, $20, opens with oak followed by smooth, broad, creamy flavors of apple, pear, lemon, and oak laced with nice acidity and finishing medium-broad and medium-long. It is nicely integrated and structured.
Meredith May, Patterson's Beverage Journal, October 2003

by Dan Clarke, Proprietor | Editor: California Wine and Food
"Very appealing wine. Flavors are more of the 'tropical fruit' than 'citrussy' style. Has a great spicy, hazelnut finish."

Colorado Wine News, January - March 2003
"It is still young. It has a candied bouquet of raspberry, cherry, coffee, chocolate and vanilla introducing mouthfulling flavors of the same plus spice and a medium-broad, persistent, and increasingly spicy, peppery finish. If you give it several hours to develop and open it becomes smooth, almost unctuous, with a very rich bouquet and layers of black-berry black cherry, black raspberry, coffee, and dark chocolate on the nose to which the palate adds quince and spice plus deftly handled, supple tannins. The finish becomes long, medium-broad, and rich. There is a lot happening here with layers of flavors. It is a better Merlot than some costing two to three times as much." Excellent. BEST WINE.

The 2002 Chardonnay Vista del Halcón, Hawk Hill Vineyard, Russian River Valley, $22...Initial aromas of oak and cream open to add pear and toast. Smooth and broad on the palate it first shows lemon, apple, and rhubarb before adding pineapple, apricot, mineral, and chalk. It finishes medium-broad and medium-long. Nicely structured with good acidity...
Meredith May, Patterson's Beverage Journal, October 2003
"Charles Creek's Vista del Halcón Hawk Hill Vineyard 2002 Chardonnay is a wonderful citrus and pineapple gem, creamy and textured through the finish."
